RIP: Tyler Clementi

Image via Dudetubeonline.

I had heard the name Tyler Clementi this past week in relation to the suicides of 4 gay teens, but I did not really know the events surrounding Tyler's death until I read about it last night in USA Today. I still didn't think I'd post about this. I didn't want to seem to be using Tyler's death as a means to get more web traffic but then last night, I watched this...

Be sure to pay attention to the dates of some of the video: the Quiet project was 1999. We Live in Public in which it was just John Harris and his girlfriend took place in 2000. These are the precursors of reality TV, Skype, MySpace and Facebook. And as Josh says, everything is free. Except for the video: that we own.

The documentary was chilling, and with what I had just read about Tyler Clementi, I knew I wanted to post the trailer for the doc. It seemed connected in a very startling way.

Yes, there is something to be said for public humiliation v. the web but without the ability to turn on a webcam from another location, there wouldn't have been such a public invasion of Tyler's privacy.

You can go here to see Tyler playing his violin.

This is so horrendous. I'm sorry that Tyler felt there was no other way to deal with what he had been subjected to. I'm also sorry that -- undoubtedly -- the two despicable people who did this will get off will little more than a slap on the wrist.

After all, the religious and political Right would be very happy if all gays could be killed legally. And, we will be told, since the two kids who did this to Tyler are "basically good kids" (which they aren't--look at their actions) and we "don't want to ruin their lives over a single mistake," they will end up doing community service or having their families pay a fine...and others will get the message, "Fags are fair game." After all, Tyler was doing something Jesus didn't want him to do.

Schweigsame, I think this is getting way too much press, and like the death of Matthew Shepard, I don't think the two students (especially the roommate) will be able to escape this. At least, I hope not.
