This picture made me ache.

I recently met someone who happened to be biracial - at first I thought he might be Latino or possibly Middle Eastern, but I learned that his father was African American and his mother was white.

We hit it off very well: we both loved singing, playing piano, karaoke, and we could talk and talk and talk, but it became clear that certain things would not work out between us: I'm trying to quit drinking while he likes to drink nightly.

But still...this picture made me ache.

While I agree with quite a bit of Unicorn Booty's commentary, I disagree that - in its context - Kylie's entire body of work before 2000 is awful.

However, it does seem like a good timeline and gauge of the pop music that was being created during that period. For example, when I saw the video for 1995's "Where Is the Feeling?" my first thought was "When did Madonna's Erotica come out?"

(Thankfully starting with 1990, I wanted to stab my eyes out much less. I'm suprised I like Kylie at all after having "Locomotion" thrust upon me all my childhood.)

But "Where Is the Feeling?" was immediately followed by the Nick Cave and the Bad Seed's "Where the Wild Roses Grow" featuring Kylie which is an amazing song, though I didn't know she was in it. This was an album that my Alabama boyfriend introduced me to on a mix tape.

I think there was definite improvement from the 80s to the 90s and definitely starting with Nick Cave even more improvement.

But I agree, it's amazing that the woman who brought us "Locomotion" and 1992 "Celebration" also brought us "Can't Get You Out of My Head," "Get Outta My Way" and "I Believe in One."

One last thing...this might be totally wrong, but I feel like with the album "Where the Wild Roses Grow," there is an assuredness that is missing in most of her earlier videos.

Wait a minute...I just got to the videos for X...maybe not.

I also feel like people think I was walking around in a cloud and didn’t realize I was gay, which I find really offensive. I find it offensive to me, but I also find it offensive to all the men I’ve been out with.”

I also know that with my understanding of both gender studies and feminism that to some degree we should be able to choose whom we love. I imagine that there is a particular percentage of the population that being gay could be a choice - and I'm not simple meaning people who consider themselves bisexual or possibly Sophie B. Hawkins.

But still...

I still admire Ms. Nixon, but I think her comments given the current state of politics, the current state of gay people in the world, and the current state of gay teens in the US, I think her comments are ill-timed and quite thoughtless.

...how very liberal Kentucky Democrat Kathy Stein will lose her Kentucky senate seat because the GOP is full of douches.

A Democrat from far Western Kentucky will soon represent downtown Lexington in the state Senate under a redistricting plan approved by the Republican-controlled Senate on Wednesday.

Under the plan, which is expected to become law within a few days, Democratic Sen. Kathy Stein of Lexington will be out of office at year's end. Statewide, 10 senators will be placed in districts with other incumbent lawmakers.

The Senate's passage of House Bill 1 on a 22-14 vote moves Stein's Senate district to northeastern Kentucky. Stein, whose four-year term ends this year, would have to move to the new district in order to seek re-election in 2012...

She called the Senate's actions "petty" and said she is considering legal action to stop the proposed plan.

"You just have to laugh sometimes to keep from crying," Stein said Wednesday during debate on the Senate floor.

Stein, a lawyer who was first elected to the House in 1997 and later the Senate in 2009, has been an outspoken critic of the Republican Senate majority and Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville.

Stein said she did not learn of the move until 1:30 p.m. Thursday while watching the Senate State and Local Government Committee meeting on TV in her legislative office.

Stein had filed about two weeks ago to seek re-election in the 13th, but that is not possible under the new Senate map...

Senate State and Local Government Chairman Damon Thayer, R-Georgetown, said moving Stein out of Fayette County was not political retaliation. The move was necessary to redraw Senate district lines to reflect the state's shifting population, he said.

His committee approved the plan a few hours before the full Senate took it up.

Thayer did not answer a reporter when asked if Williams had ordered that Stein's district be moved because of a vendetta. Stein said she was glad that Thayer at least did not lie. Williams later said he did not direct Thayer to move Stein's district.

Several Democrats blasted the Senate GOP redistricting plan during debate.

I call bullshit on the whole thing. I would say that both Thayer and (especially) Williams should be ashamed but after living in Kentucky I know that neither Senator have ANY shame.

I hate reality TV. In all its myriad forms...which is why I was surprised when I fell in love with The Sing-Off. And it was all in thanks to this group...the Pentatonix - who week after week sent chills up my spin. Their version(s) (of everything they did) of Kanye West's Love Lockdown was absolutely amazing...and much much much better than Kanye's (and all the other original artists!) Be sure to look them up on YouTube or like them on Facebook.

And now I just have to wait for their CD(s) to be released!

Just returned via I.L.L. - that's Interlibrary Loan for you non-library folk - is the book The Origins of the Korean War, clocking in at just over 600 pages.

Why do you need 600 pages simply to say that General MacArthur was a crazy mofo?

As for Adele...it occurred to me as I was skipping over an Adele song yet again on my iPod - Turning Tables to be exact - that I really REALLY need to delete her from my iTunes.

Corollary thought - I really need to update my iPod, so I can get rid of the Bright Eyes that I've ALREADY deleted from iTunes.

Thanks to Grimm not being on tonight for some lame ass family movie, I was happy to watch A Gifted Man. Which I probably wouldn't watch, until I saw Margo Martindale on it. I love her.

And then I saw her. The Gifted Man's haunted soul bringing back his wife (?) or girlfriend (?), played by my ever Elizabeth Bennett...Jennifer Ehle, who like Bernadette Peters, never ages!

This is a risky proposition. Last night I saw Emma Caulfield (oh, Anya!) on an NBC show. She was a cracked out porn ho. It made me very sad.

Chris Whitney lived in San Francisco in the 1980s, when there wasn't much known about AIDS. But then he tested positive for HIV in 1985. He explains what happened next to his friend Erin Kuka.

"The first person I told was the person I was dating at the time, and that was pretty much the last conversation I had with him," Whitney says. "You know, the fear just took over. That kind of made me really wary about opening up to people.

"So, I decided to do some traveling. And I met a Frenchman who would become my partner for the next 10 years," he says. "And I was freaked out about telling him. I was like, 'Well, I have to tell you something. I, you know — I'm HIV positive.' And his response was, 'Yeah, and so?' And I thought, 'OK, he didn't understand that.'"

"Language barrier," Kuka says.

"Right," Whitney says.

Believing that Alexandre Coda didn't understand what "HIV" meant, Whitney explained — and Coda listened.

"And he said, 'Yeah. No, I understand, and so am I. And, so what?'" Whitney says. "And I was so blown away by that response. I was so used to always being the person who was positive meeting somebody who was negative. It didn't occur to me that I would meet somebody who was also positive."

HIV Treatment Lags In U.S., Guaranteeing More Infections

I think there are two reasons for this...

1) The stigma of HIV...

and

2) A rabid, Christian far-right (which needs to be put down) who still see HIV as a "gay" disease...or in the case of Africa (and in a growing number of cases in the U.S.), something that doesn't "affect" white people...so why bother worrying about it. Let the animals die.

Police Clear Occupy Camps in Philly and LA

The Occupy L.A. campsite near Los Angeles' city hall is "in shambles" this morning after police moved in to clear out protesters who had been ordered to leave, the Los Angeles Times writes. Tents have been "uprooted and strewn all over," the newspaper says.

Our colleagues at KPCC, who were live-blogging through the night, report that more than 200 people were arrested during an operation that involved about 1,400 police officers. It appears the overwhelming show of force, plus a strategic decision by police to divide up the site into several sections rather than to confront protesters with one solid line of officers, kept things mostly peaceful.

On Morning Edition, KPCC's Frank Stoltz told host Renee Montagne that it was "a massive police operation." Many of those arrested resisted passively and were carried or led from the scene by officers.

Only a few protesters remain. They've climbed into trees. Police are using their bomb squad's "cherry picker" to reach up to get those individuals.

Inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement, the protesters had been camped out near L.A. city hall for two months. Some have vowed they will return to the site near city hall, the Times says.

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia there have been more than 40 arrests at the Occupy protest site near city hall.
